Equivalents are nearest matches, not identical grades. Composition limits, mechanical properties and test requirements differ in detail between standards and product forms. For anything that matters, the governing standard, the drawing and the mill certificate decide.

Designation systems

How each country names the same steel.

AISI / SAE / ASTMUnited States. Stainless and alloy steels use AISI/SAE numbers such as 304 or 4140; structural steels use ASTM specification names such as A36.
EN name and numberEurope. EN 10027-1 names describe the chemistry (X5CrNi18-10, 42CrMo4); EN 10027-2 numbers such as 1.4301 identify the same steel.
JISJapan. Prefixes show the product group: SUS stainless, SCM chromium-molybdenum, SKD and SKS tool steels, SKH high-speed steel.
GBChina. Recent GB stainless names start with the carbon content (06Cr19Ni10); older names such as 0Cr18Ni9 still appear on drawings and certificates.
