About 201
Austenitic chromium-manganese stainless. General characteristics; check the standard and the supplier for anything critical.
What it is
An austenitic stainless steel in which manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel. It costs less than 304 but has lower corrosion resistance and work-hardens faster.
Typical uses
Cookware, appliance trim, sinks, decorative tube and indoor applications without strong corrosion.
Machining notes
Harder to machine than 304 because it work-hardens faster. Use sharp tools, positive rake and steady feed.

Stainless fasteners
Stainless bolts are graded to ISO 3506 (for example A2 and A4 austenitic), not to the ISO 898-1 classes in the bolt torque chart. Do not use those torque values for stainless fasteners; stainless threads also gall easily, so use an anti-seize and the fastener maker's figures.
Bolt torque chartTapping stainless
Stainless work-hardens and grips the tap. Aim for about 60–70 % thread: one size larger than the usual tap drill is common. The tap drill chart shows the percentage each drill leaves.
