410 stainless steel equivalents
410 stainless steel is nearest to EN 1.4006 (X12Cr13), JIS SUS410 and China GB 12Cr13. These are nearest equivalents, not identical grades: the governing standard or mill certificate decides.

About 410
Martensitic stainless. General characteristics; check the standard and the supplier for anything critical.
What it is
The basic martensitic chromium stainless steel. It can be hardened and tempered by heat treatment, is magnetic, and has moderate corrosion resistance, below that of 304.
Typical uses
Pump shafts, valve trim, steam and gas turbine parts, cutlery, fasteners and general hardened parts in mildly corrosive service.
Machining notes
Machine in the annealed condition, then harden. Machinability is fair; it behaves more like an alloy steel than like 304.

Stainless fasteners
Stainless bolts are graded to ISO 3506 (for example A2 and A4 austenitic), not to the ISO 898-1 classes in the bolt torque chart. Do not use those torque values for stainless fasteners; stainless threads also gall easily, so use an anti-seize and the fastener maker's figures.
Bolt torque chartTapping stainless
Stainless work-hardens and grips the tap. Aim for about 60–70 % thread: one size larger than the usual tap drill is common. The tap drill chart shows the percentage each drill leaves.
