About 17-4PH (630)
Precipitation-hardening stainless. General characteristics; check the standard and the supplier for anything critical.
What it is
A precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel containing copper. It is hardened by a low-temperature ageing treatment, identified by condition codes such as H900 and H1150, which gives high strength with little distortion.
Typical uses
Aerospace fittings, pump and valve shafts, gears, fasteners, and oil and gas components.
Machining notes
Usually machined in condition A (solution-treated) or an over-aged condition, then aged. Ageing causes only slight, predictable dimensional change.

Stainless fasteners
Stainless bolts are graded to ISO 3506 (for example A2 and A4 austenitic), not to the ISO 898-1 classes in the bolt torque chart. Do not use those torque values for stainless fasteners; stainless threads also gall easily, so use an anti-seize and the fastener maker's figures.
Bolt torque chartTapping stainless
Stainless work-hardens and grips the tap. Aim for about 60–70 % thread: one size larger than the usual tap drill is common. The tap drill chart shows the percentage each drill leaves.
